DATA , VOICE and IPTV all in one

 Passive Optical Networking

Yes !! You heard it right !! Passive Optical Networking is the future for IT Infrastructure for all the Hotels , Malls , Schools , Internetwork Connectivities for societies . Abstract—Traffic patterns in access networks have evolved from voice- and text-oriented services to video- and image-based services. This change will require new access networks that support high-speed (> 100 Mb/s), symmetric, and guaranteed bandwidths for future video services with high-definition TV quality. To satisfy the required bandwidth over a 20-km transmission distance, single-mode optical fiber is currently the only practical choice. To minimize the cost of implementing an FTTP solution, a passive optical network (PON) that uses a point-to-multipoint architecture is generally considered to be the best approach.

PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK

passive optical network (PON) is a fiber-optic telecommunications technology for delivering broadband network access to end-customers. Its architecture implements a point-to-multipoint topology, in which a single optical fiber serves multiple endpoints by using unpowered (passivefiber optic splitters to divide the fiber bandwidth among multiple access points.

PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORKING INFRASTRUCTURE

A passive optical network consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) at the service provider's central office (hub) and a number of optical network units (ONUs) or optical network terminals (ONTs), near end users. A PON reduces the amount of fiber and central office equipment required compared with point-to-point architectures. A passive optical network is a form of fiber-optic access network.

VARIOUS PRINCIPLES OF PON

The PON can be achieved via for following four principles  using time-domain multiplexing (TDM), wavelength domain multiplexing (WDM), subcarrier multiplexing (SCM), and code division multiplexing (CDM). However the most feasible solutions are available for PON systems, which are TDMPON and WDM-PON solutions.

ACHIEVABLE BANDWIDTH WITH PON INFRASTRUCTURE

The latest ITU-T G.984 Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks (GPON) standard  permits several choices of bit rate, but the industry has converged on 2.488 gigabits per second (Gbit/s) of downstream bandwidth, and 1.244 Gbit/s of upstream bandwidth. GPON Encapsulation Method (GEM) allows very efficient packaging of user traffic with frame segmentation.

MAXIMUM ALLOWED DISTANCE

The PON Infrastructure uses single-mode optical fiber as the transmission media and uses a point to multipoint network . Single-mode fiber also provides essentially unlimited transmission bandwidth over extremely long distances. The end goal is to provide an optical fiber to each customer premise or home. This type of network is commonly referred to as Fiber to the Home/Premise (FTTH/P). This point to multipoint fabric can reach to a distance of 20 Kms from the source to its destinations and is merely a limitation of material quality of your optical Fibre .

FEASIBILITY

The global GPON market size is estimated to grow from USD 6.3 billion in 2020 to USD 8.3 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 5.8%. The market growth is propelled by the high demand for GPON network for triple and quad-play services, increasing demand for high speed broadband services, advancement in GPON technology, and trial and deployment of the 5G network.

FEASIBILITY IN INDIA

The same solution is also very much feasible in India as well . Infact the only factor that has made available cheaper datas and that too at such higher speeds today is because of PON infrastructure . Various companies in Delhi , Chandigarh and Jaipur are these days offering FTTH solutions with tripple play devices . The Reliance JIO FTTH and ACT Fibernet solution to homes are classic examples of their implementation .

ADVANTAGES OF PON

1. The tripple play devices and PON infrastructure can accomodate your video streaming , data and Analog Voice over a single fibre.

2. There is no need to lay Riser cables if you are going with a PON infrastructure .

3. The robustness of the system can be recognised by the fact that many social internet infrasture is preferring to move ahead with PON infrastructure so that to avoid multiple chances of device failures .

4. There is no need of Internet switches if you are working on a PON Infrastructure .

5. Much higher bandwidth and that too over long distances can be achieved on PON Infrastructure .

6. The components of PON infrastructure like OLTs , ONTs and Passive Splitters are much cheaper as compared to active networking infrastructures.

COMPANIES OFFERING SOLUTIONS ON GPON INFRASTRUCTURE

Huawei holds the leading position in the GPON market.  Huawei’s GPON OLT and ONT products are the most popular GPON products.Nokia is considered to have the highest brand value in the market, primarily because of its strong presence in the networking market. Moreover, the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent has helped its technological innovation in GPON. This is expected to be a key factor driving the growth of this company.

The various other companies  companies involved in the GPON market are ZTE (China), FiberHome (China), DASAN Zhone (US), Calix (US), ADTRAN (US), CISCO (US), NEC (Japan), Allied Telesis (Japan), Iskratel (Slovenia), Unizyx (China), and Alphion (US)
